About The Book
The Balanced Dog offers a genuinely dog-centred, evidence-based approach to behaviour and training. Drawing on years of experience in rescue work and behaviour consultation, Julia Langlands explores the deeper factors shaping canine behaviour, from the gut-brain axis and hormonal influences to neurological development, stress, and routine. Practical without being prescriptive, the book helps you uncover the root causes behind behaviour, challenge common misconceptions, and create ethical, effective strategies tailored to your individual dog. It’s a guide for anyone who wants to move beyond surface-level training and support a calmer, more balanced life for their dog.

Meet The Author
Julia Langlands has spent nearly three decades working on the frontlines of canine behaviour, helping dogs and their owners navigate complex challenges. As the founder of Balance Behaviour and Senior Behaviour Tutor at the British College of Canine Studies, she combines hands-on experience with professional education, supporting both dog owners and the next generation of behaviour specialists.
Her work is rooted in real-world practice. Julia has fostered and rehabilitated hundreds of dogs, including those struggling with fear, anxiety, and behaviours often labelled as “aggressive” or “untrainable.” This depth of experience, alongside her ongoing study of behavioural theory, has shaped a practical, balanced approach that puts the individual dog first.
A member of the Canine and Feline Behaviour Association, Julia believes that real dogs are the greatest teachers. Each dog she has worked with has contributed to her understanding, and these collective insights form the foundation of The Balanced Dog.
Julia lives in Yorkshire with her husband and co-founder, Steve. Together, they share their home with a diverse group of dogs, reflecting the balanced, multi-dog environment that underpins their work and philosophy.
